Yesterday was a big day for Katie Couric. After announcing that she will be producing and hosting a nationally syndicated talk show for ABC beginning in September 2012, the former CBS Evening News anchor dropped by The Tonight Show Monday night -- and had some choice humorous words for both Sarah Palin and Donald Trump.
When host Jay Leno asked Couric her thoughts on the Donald, who's recently made headlines for hinting at a presidential bid (which never came to fruition) and suggesting that President Obama might not be a U.S. citizen (a claim that, obviously, proved false), Couric answered honestly. "He actually can be a very, very nice person with a good heart," she said. "But I think he was just acting like a jackass for a while. It's like he was abducted by aliens temporarily."
Couric was equally candid when discussing Palin, who might be planning a presidential bid of her own. "She's so polarizing," Couric said. "I think even people who don't like her are fascinated by her."
Couric went on to observe that people seem "motivated by their dislike of her." The media's ongoing coverage of every move Palin makes is likely part of that motivation, something that Couric, an experienced journalist, is well-positioned to understand. "(Palin) makes good copy, and so (the media) cover her incessantly -- and maybe more than they actually should."
Couric's charm and humor in conversation reminds us yet again us of how much we are looking forward to her upcoming talk show on ABC. We know Couric doesn't like to be called "perky," but she certainly is lively and fun to watch. As proof, check out her Tonight Show interview below.
